MJR installs second ballast system for Stena

The new system was installed on board the Stena Hibernia vessel earlier this year whilst in dry dock at Harland and Wolff’s Belfast yard. It follows the installation on board the Stena Scotia in July last year.

The integrated control system uses MJR’s Lloyd’s Register-approved marine automation platform, OEtm, to manage all aspects of ballast control including valve operation, tank levels and temperature monitoring, bilge level alarming and automatic heeling control.

Tank volumes and weights are calculated in real-time and data exchanged with the vessel’s loading and stability computer to enable necessary shear force, bending movement and stability calculations.

The ballast control system was integrated with the existing instrumentation, retaining existing sensors, leading to a reportedly significant cost saving and reduced commissioning times. Intuitive measurement calibration functionalities were also provided and were said to contribute significantly to improved accuracy.
