Under the agreement, the two companies will collaborate on the design, construction and deployment of a state-of-the-art data centre hosted on a retrofitted vessel. The goal is to meet surging global demand for digital infrastructure while minimising environmental impact.

Optimised operations

The floating data centre will be equipped with advanced vessel monitoring systems and utilise real-time vessel data to optimise operations.

By deploying on the ocean, the mobile platform will bypass the issues of land scarcity, permitting delays and power grid limitations that hinder the development of traditional data centres.

In addition, by using a retrofitted vessel for the centre, it’s a move which will significantly reduce raw material usage, construction time and cost.

“This MOU represents an important step forward in leveraging the MOL Group’s assets and expertise to rapidly build digital infrastructure while minimising environmental impact,” added Tomoaki Ichida, managing executive officer at MOL.

The floating data centre will also feature seawater-based cooling systems, cutting electricity use and lowering emissions.

Electrification options are built into the platform’s modular design, further supporting net zero goals through sustainable energy integration and emissions data tracking.

With deployment expected by 2027, the development of the first floating ship data platform marks a bold new frontier for digital infrastructure, combining vessel data, electrification and environmental innovation in one scalable solution.
