Namibia unveils green hydrogen hub

The solar-powered, off-grid site includes a hydrogen electrolyser, refuelling infrastructure and a dedicated Hydrogen Academy.

Supported by the EU’s Global Gateway initiative, with €1.3 billion in committed funding, the project underscores growing European-Namibian collaboration on clean energy.

“Today marks a proud moment for all of us,” said Alexander Saverys, chief executive of CMB.TECH.

“This facility is the result of true international collaboration— combining Namibian ambition and European innovation. It’s a model for sustainable energy and a symbol of strong African-European ties.”

Green hydrogen produced onsite is already powering road and off-road transport, and will soon fuel Namibia’s first hydrogen-powered locomotive and harbour vessel, positioning the country at the forefront of maritime decarbonisation in Africa.

A multi-purpose vessel, currently under construction in the Netherlands, will be deployed at Walvis Bay in 2026. It will run on dual-fuel hydrogen engines, supplied by Cleanergy’s mobile 500-bar hydrogen refueller, enabling flexible, low-emission operations across ports and rail networks.

Highlighting Namibia’s strategic ambition, Prime Minister Ngurare said, “We are laying the foundations for an economy that is resilient, inclusive and sustainable.”
