New eco bulkers for Oldendorff

The newbuilds, being named by the Oldendorff family, are the 100,000 dwt post-panamax Dietrich Oldendorff and the three 62,500dwt bulkers Beate Oldendorff, Benjamin Oldendorff and Britta Oldendorff. They are all being delivered “within a few weeks between mid March and mid April”, Oldendorff said. The owner added that a second 100,000dwt post-panamax newbuild – Diane Oldendorff – was being named later and would leave the Oshima yard in June.

The two post-panamax (D-class) vessels are of a new design which Oldendorff said “currently represents the most economical hull form for this size class, featuring a very low fuel consumption”. No further drive details were given. The ships are 235m long and 38m wide drawing 14.99m.

The 62,500 ton B-Class Ultramax newbuilds are of the popular Oshima-62k design. Listed as 200m long and 32.26m wide drawing 13.31m they are of 78,600 cbm and reportedly carry four 30t cranes.

Oldendorff said they come “with many upgrades” including Co2 fittings and stronger tank tops. The owner also said all five newbuilds are fitted with Yara exhaust gas cleaning systems and Techcross ballast water treatment systems .

Oldendorff, paying tribute to “decades of close cooperation with Japanese shipyards” praised Oshima for its super-eco bulk carrier designs. The German owner has in recent years ordered many eco newbuilds in China, Korea and Japan featuring very low fuel consumption and much reduced carbon footprints.

Those ships now make up about 95% of the capacity of Oldendorff’s currently owned and chartered fleet of some 176 ships. It normally operates a diversified fleet of more than 700 bulk carriers at any one time.
