New MR tanker wind collaboration

The memorandum of agreement, signed during the Posidonia shipping exhibition in Athens, will focus on integrating bound4blue’s eSAIL technology into a next-generation tanker design.

LR will provide design appraisal and technical assurance as part of the process towards approval in principle, while LISCR will support regulatory alignment for flag state requirements.

“This agreement reflects LR’s continued focus on enabling maritime decarbonisation through practical, scalable solutions,” said Alberto Pérez, head of Maritime Commercial Markets at Lloyd’s Register.

“By supporting the development of next-generation tanker designs, we are helping shipowners and operators navigate the transition to lower-carbon operations while maintaining commercial viability.”

LISCR added that the integration of wind-assisted systems can deliver immediate and long-term benefits. “Integrating wind-assisted propulsion on MR tankers can reduce emissions while strengthening competitiveness and regulatory compliance,” said Thomas Klenum, executive vice president.

The initiative is intended to reduce uncertainty around wind-assisted propulsion adoption in the tanker sector by validating performance, safety and compliance at an early stage of design.

K Shipbuilding said the project strengthens its position in eco-friendly vessel development. “As demand for sustainable shipping solutions continues to grow, this MoU will further strengthen our capabilities in eco-friendly ship technology development,” said Tae-Hyun Koh, chief technology officer.

Bound4blue highlighted the growing role of wind propulsion in commercial shipping. “Wind propulsion is becoming an important part of future-ready vessel design, especially in segments such as MR tankers,” said Daniel Mann, chief commercial officer.

“It is a meaningful step in supporting the decarbonisation of MR tankers.”
