Norwegian firms unveil advanced naval propulsion
The collaboration aims to deliver high reliability, stealth operation, low emissions and future fuel flexibility for naval and governmental vessels.
The system is marketed as lightweight, compact and scalable, supporting power from 1.4 to 50 MW per propeller, making it suitable for coastguard ships, corvettes, frigates, destroyers and support vessels.
It integrates Bergen Engines’ medium-speed gensets with STADT’s VariGrid technology, providing a reported 10–35% additional fuel savings for vessels with variable operation profiles.
Fully compliant with IMO and NATO standards, the solution also supports the green transition by accommodating biofuels, methanol, ammonia, biogas and hydrogen blends.
STADT Naval brings 40 years of experience and over 30 naval and commercial vessels operating with Lean Propulsion technology, ensuring high efficiency, minimal electric power loss, and low underwater radiated noise.
Bergen Engines, with over 80 years of maritime experience, delivers gensets renowned for robustness, fuel efficiency, modular maintenance and low lifecycle costs.
The collaboration prioritises Norwegian and European production, eliminating reliance on rare earth materials and ensuring sovereign technology for the Norwegian Navy.
The solution also builds on a strong track record, already proven in the Royal Norwegian Navy and internationally with the Swedish, Polish and Spanish navies.
STADT Lean Propulsion has been tested and verified with the Norwegian Defence Material Agency and Ministry of Defence, while Bergen Engines’ products continue to serve more than 10 leading navies worldwide.
