NYK to study combination of energy saving devices
Although the effects of individual energy-saving devices have been verified by the marine equipment manufacturer that developed each device, an optimal combination of multiple energy-saving devices and verification of their synergistic effects have not been thoroughly researched.
The companies will also select optimal combinations of those energy-saving devices and install them on existing ships: NYK aims to reduce GHG emissions from existing vessels by installing energy-saving devices on about 50 dry bulk carriers over the next three years.
Through this initiative, improvements in fuel efficiency of 1-8% are expected.
In June, BHP and NYK agreed to jointly study the next-generation of zero-GHG emission ships fuelled by green or blue ammonia. If feasible, this could potentially support both organisations in their ongoing efforts to achieve their respective long-term GHG emission reduction targets for shipping and present a further decarbonisation option for the shipping industry. BHP and NYK also aim to promote the use of GHG emission reduction measures such as energy-saving technologies and alternative lower- and zero-GHG emission marine fuels.
