Oceanwide commissions second polar cruiser

The M/V Janssonius is scheduled for completion in 2021 and will have a capacity of 85 passenger and 38 crew cabins. A nearly identical size and design to the Hondius, the new vessel will be a Polar Class 6 ice-strengthened vessel equivalent to a 1A super ice-class ship.

The ship will measure 107m long and 17.6m wide. She will be powered by two 12DZC – 4212kWm – 750 rpm main engines enabling speeds of up to 15 knots, the same as Hondius. Auxiliary power is provided by two 6DZC – 1500kWe – 750 rpm engines and the propulsion system will include an adjustable pitch propeller, flexible power management, and a shaft generator as opposed to a diesel-driven generator. Stern and bow thrusters will enable Janssonius to drift or remain stationary.

To minimise environmental impact, Janssonius will have LED interior and exterior lighting, biodegradable paints and lubricants, steam heating that uses a minimum of electricity, and waste heat that will be reused for the production of fresh water.

Like most of the ships in Oceanwide Expeditions’ fleet, Janssonius is named in honour of a historic Dutch cartographer. Johannes Janssonius (1588-1664) was a map maker and publisher born in the Dutch town of Arnhem, but lived and worked primarily in Amsterdam.
