This joint venture – Carbotreat Maritime – is the spin-off of a four-year collaboration with TNO (the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research) and Bouman.

“With our realised land-based CO2 capture plants, combined with Conoship’s expertise, we can deliver large-scale carbon capture and storage plants on board ships,” said Wilco van Wijck, chief executive at Bouman Industries.

“With Carbotreat Maritime we can reduce the carbon footprint of shipping with more than 75% in the short term and are aiming for 100% in the future,” he added.

The companies say that a ship-based carbon capture system can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 95%. The captured CO2 can be cooled and stored on board before transporting to shore for use in the production of methane.

The systems under development will be suitable for newbuilds and also as retrofits to existing fleets.

Conoship has been researching and developing the maritime application of this technology, particularly for LNG-powered vessels. In the international carbon capture research project EverLoNG, two carbon capture systems are under development in case studies for two vessels – Heerema’s Sleipnir and a TotalEnergies-owned LNG carrier.

“Bouman Industries with its subsidiary Corbotreat is known for their strength in building field proven land-based carbon capture systems,” said Geert Dokter, chief executive at Conoship International.

“With this joint venture, Carbotreat Maritime, we will develop these systems [so that they are] suitable for use on ships to reduce CO2 emissions in maritime application,” he added.
