Outdated ship data wastes millions

That’s according to a new industry report backed by Danelec, which reveals that the continued use of once-daily reporting is costing the global shipping fleet millions.

“This is shipping’s data wake-up call,” said Casper Jensen, CEO of Danelec.

“A single noon report might tell you what happened yesterday, but it can’t help you make smarter decisions in real time. If you only check your vessel’s vitals once every 24 hours, you’re operating with blind spots.”

Digital gap

The study, From Data to Action, highlights a major gap in digitalisation, with most ships failing to leverage real-time shipping data that could significantly improve operations and reduce emissions.

One case cited in the report showed a single voyage wasted $4,300 in fuel due to undetected inefficiencies – avoidable with continuous High-Frequency Data (HFD).

The report estimates HFD can save up to 29.7 metric tonnes of fuel per vessel per month, equating to nearly 9,000 MT over a ship’s lifespan. That’s millions in potential savings and could give a major boost to shipping efficiency.

In today’s competitive market, real-time shipping data isn’t just about cost, it’s a strategic asset. Charterers increasingly demand proof of efficient vessel performance and operators using live data command better rates and fewer disputes.

“High-Frequency Data doesn’t just enhance performance, it builds trust,” Mr Jensen added. “The ROI is immediate.”
