Plans to develop 1.7m tpy Namibia ammonia export project

The first phase of the project is expected to produce over 120,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen, converting 2GW of renewable power from a 4,000km2 solar power installation in the Tsau National Park. This is expected to to be converted into approximately 0.7 million tons per annum (mtpa) of green ammonia for export. The first phase of the project is expected to begin production by 2027.

The beginning of project construction in 2025 is subject to the satisfactory conclusion of the feasibility and technical studies.

A second phase of the project will see the renewable electricity generation capacity increased to 5GW, with 3GW of electrolyser capacity. This will increase the green ammonia export capacity to 1.7 mtpa by 2029. The budget for the first and second phases is estimated at around US$14.0 billion.

Local Namibian media sources note that renewable hydrogen figured prominently among the subjects of discussion during a joint visit to Namibia by the prime ministers of the Netherlands and Denmark in mid June 2023.

Port Infrastructure

Hyphen Hydrogen Energy has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the government of Namibia, Namibian Ports Authority (NamPort), NamPower, the Port of Rotterdam, Gasunie and Invest International to collaborate on the design of onshore infrastructure connected with Namibia’s renewable hydrogen production plans.

Namport previously signed a MoU with the Port of Rotterdam relating to cooperation in the hydrogen sector in 2021. NamPort, the Port of Rotterdam and Hyphen Hydrogen Energy have been developing a new strategic plan for the Port of Lüderitz.
