PPR 9 considered amendments to NOx Technical Code

ABS provided a summary of the meeting summary saying that the proposed amendments establish criteria for permitting their use and incorporating them into engine certification whilst ensuring an equivalent level of compliance with the NOx requirements set out in MARPOL Annex VI and the NOx Technical Code 2008.

Dorte Kubel, Regulatory Affairs Manager (M.Sc.) at MAN Energy Solutions, R&D Two-Stroke said MAN ES is very pleased that PPR 9 has agreed to develop draft amendments because clear and transparent regulation is important for engine manufacturers. “We have been involved in the development of the proposals to PPR 9 by EUROMOT for draft amendments to MARPOL Annex VI and the NOx Technical Code regarding the use of multiple EOP. We are therefore happy that many delegations supported the proposal from EUROMOT at PPR 9.”

The purpose of the proposals by EUROMOT is to provide further transparency on the use of multiple engine operating profiles to demonstrate that the use does not weaken the effectiveness of the NOx regulation. Multiple EOPs can be applied, for example, to enable the switch between different fuel types on dual fuel engines.

Discussions on the topic will continue in an intersessional correspondence group and at PPR 10 in April 2023. MAN ES is looking forward to contributing actively to the planned correspondence group.

ABS notes that PPR 9 also received proposals to address current test cycle requirements which do not adequately address application to variable-speed/variable-load engines used for main propulsion or ship power generation, with proposed amendments to clarify test cycle application.
