Propeller retrofit demand soars
According to Lloyd’s Register’s Energy Saving Devices Retrofit Report, the increase is being driven by tighter emissions regulations and the shipping industry’s push for greater fuel efficiency.
“Our research reveals that propeller and ESD retrofits offer ship operators a proven pathway to significant fuel savings, extended regulatory compliance and meaningful emissions reductions,” said Claudene Sharp-Patel, global technical director at Lloyd’s Register.
While ESDs such as rudder bulbs can cut fuel consumption by up to 3.5%, only 1.74% of the global fleet includes such devices from newbuild. In contrast, 8.42% of vessels on the current orderbook are being fitted with ESDs, with bulk carriers, tankers and container ships leading adoption due to their high fuel use.
More than 10,000 ships already feature ESDs from newbuild, and an additional 1,400 vessels have been retrofitted since 2020. Nearly 1,500 retrofits are contracted for completion by the end of 2024, many on newer ships. In fact, over a third of 2024 retrofits will be installed on vessels less than ten years old.
Despite growing interest, the report highlights challenges such as device compatibility, unverified performance claims and biofouling.
“Successful retrofits require far more than simply bolting on additional equipment,” said Sharp-Patel. “They demand sophisticated analysis, integration and ongoing performance management.”
To mitigate these, LR recommends a five-step approach involving hydrodynamic analysis, performance monitoring and long-term maintenance.
The findings are part of LR’s broader Retrofit Research Programme, aimed at supporting cleaner, more efficient shipping.
