Remote DP pilot project launches

Set to begin later this year aboard Solstad’s Normand Sentinel, the trial aims to demonstrate how DP operations can be conducted from shore, expanding operational flexibility while opening doors to a broader and more diverse recruitment pool.

“By combining new technologies with operational experience, we see the opportunity to transfer functions such as DP operations from offshore to onshore,” said Lars Peder Solstad, chief executive of Solstad.

The project’s first phase will involve two offshore vessels – Normand Sentinel and Østensjø’s Edda Freya – both of which will maintain full onboard DP teams to ensure safety and gather comparative data.

The feasibility of remote DP2 operations and a more flexible operational model will also be assessed.

Lisa Edvardsen Haugan, president of Kongsberg Maritime, emphasised the project’s forward-looking ambitions. “Together with our experienced, forward-thinking and innovative partners, we aim to challenge established norms in the maritime industry through innovative remote technology, collectively addressing future challenges with proven technological solutions,” she said.

Operators will work from a remote operations centre managed by Remota, supported by advanced connectivity and cybersecurity infrastructure.

“Remota will be in position to offer DP from Remote Operation Centres to the wider DP market,” said Sveinung Soma, chief executive of Remota. “Our customers will benefit from lower operating costs and higher crew utilisation and flexibility.”
