Russia’s Zvezda mulls screw propeller tender for LNG vessels
The tender expected to be concluded in September for 6 meter diameter propellers with a weight of up to 40 tons. The tender will cover screw propellers for 15 LNG carriers currently under construction by Zvezda for LNG supplier Novatek, as part of Novatek’s LNG 2 project.
The propellers were originally expected to be supplied by local propeller manufacturer, Zvezdochka, which forms part of the state-owned United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC). Zvezdochka previously supplied 45 propellers for Novatek’s previous LNG carriers, which were built at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering’s (DSME) shipyards in South Korea.
Sources close to Zvezda and the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade told the Motorship the inclusion of Zvezdochka on a list of entities subject to US sanctions, led Zvezda’s partner, General Electric, to refuse to source material from the supplier.
The Singaporean subsidiary of General Electric owns a 50% stake in Saphir, a joint venture with Rosneft to produce rudder propellers in Primorye Territory. General Electric is refusing to authorise purchases from companies included on the US sanctions list.
The organisers of the tender expect to attract bids from leading marine equipment producers from South Korea, as well as producers in Europe.
