International Maritime Organization (IMO) guidelines, combined with evolving Class Rules such as Lloyd’s Register’s Low Flashpoint Fuels (LFPF) requirements, are shaping a robust framework to manage these risks.
For shipowners considering retrofits, safety adaptations range from alcohol-resistant fire suppression systems to enhanced ventilation and leak detection, with structural modifications to prevent stress corrosion cracking. What are the key safety considerations for shipowners when retrofitting vessels to run on methanol?
Paul Herbert, principal technology specialist, Lloyd’s Register: Retrofitting a vessel for methanol fuel requires upgrading fuel storage to handle low flashpoint and corrosivity, installing alcohol-resistant fire suppression systems, enhancing ventilation and leak detection, and modifying structural elements. Compliance with IMO safety standards and where full LR Class notation is proposed, compliance with the requirements of LR LFPF Rules, Appendix LR1, and crew training are essential throughout the process.
How does methanol compare to conventional marine fuels in terms of fire and explosion risks, and what design standards are evolving to manage these risks?
PH: Methanol has a much lower flashpoint than conventional marine fuels, making it more flammable under normal conditions. Its invisible flame and higher vapor explosion risk require specialised fire detection and suppression systems. Standard water mist systems are ineffective, alcohol-resistant foam is necessary. IMO guidelines and LR Rules now mandate methanol-specific safety measures, including enhanced ventilation, flame detection, and structural design to prevent stress corrosion cracking. Crew training and emergency protocols are also being updated to reflect these risks.
