Saudi green ammonia mega-project to begin production in 2026

The investment was agreed with NEOM Green Hydrogen Company, a joint venture between project Air Products, Saudi utility ACWA Power and NEOM, ACWA Power announced in a Riyadh stock exchange filing on 1 March.

The $8.5 billion NEOM project will be the world’s largest green hydrogen facility, converting 3.9GW of renewable power from solar, wind and storage to produce into up to 1.2 million tonnes of green ammonia per year.

Once the plant at NEOM becomes operational in 2026, 100% of the green ammonia will be available for global export. Air Products has an exclusive 30-year offtake agreement with the NGHC.

Air Products, a leader in industrial gases and mega-project development, previously told The Motorship that it would be the exclusive off-taker of the green ammonia and intended to transport it around the world for onward conversion into carbon-free hydrogen.

The Motorship notes that while the cost of the project has risen from $5 billion since it was initially announced in 2020. The project is expected to benefit from the construction of the world’s largest single train ammonia synthesis loop, which will produce anhydrous ammonia from hydrogen and nitrogen feedstock. The production facility will be located in an industrial complex that has deep-water access and pipeline connectivity.
