SDTR and SDARI Develop Ammonia-Fuelled Bulker with CCS
SDTR Marine announced that the bulk carrier design, which is the first ammonia-fuelled design for a vessel of its class, received an Approval in Principle (AiP) from CCS on 17 February 2023.
The project was initiated in 2022, when SDTR, SDARI and CCS set up a joint development project team. SDTR shared crucial and key operational data, essential for development and SDARI conducted the design, while CCS offered support and reviewed the design.
SDTR and SDARI enjoy a strong record of collaboration, and completed a project to develop a modified version of SDARI’s 85,000dwt bulk carrier design capable of operating on methanol with classification society ABS in January 2022.
SDARI has now taken the next step in developing a bulk carrier design with CCS capable of operating on ammonia as a fuel.
“SDARI applied the latest hydrodynamic and new energy technologies to this vessel, and hopes to create a star product to lead the industry,” said Zhou Zhiyong, Vice President of SDARI.
The CEO of SDTR expressed his hope that the project would proceed to the next stage with the cooperation of SDARI, SDTR and CCS.
