Shell signs contract with thyssenkrupp for green hydrogen plant in Rotterdam

Shell is expected to make final investment decision for the plant, Shell Holland Hydrogen 1, in spring. It will have a capacity of 200MW, making it the largest in Europe, when production starts in 2024.

Under the contract, thyssenkrupp Uhde Chlorine Engineers will engineer, procure and fabricate the electrolysis plant based on their large-scale 20MW alkaline water electrolysis modules. First construction work for the electrolysers will likely begin in Spring 2022.

The centre of the new facility will be a two-hectare hall, the size of three football fields. The net-zero plant will be built from reusable construction materials wherever possible and solar panels will be incorporated in the outside walls of the plant.

Green hydrogen will be produced for industry and the transport sector, with electricity coming from the Hollandse Kust offshore wind farm. The hydrogen will be transported via a 40 kilometre pipeline from the plant to Shell’s Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam.

thyssenkrupp AG has renamed its hydrogen business from thyssenkrupp Uhde Chlorine Engineers to thyssenkrupp nucera. The name nucera symbolises a new era of innovation, transformation, and green energy.

In December 2021, thyssenkrupp nucera signed a contract to supply a more than two-gigawatt electrolysis plant for one of the world’s largest green hydrogen projects at NEOM in Saudi Arabia.
