STS methanol bunkering breakthrough
The operation took place on 28 September 2025 at Ulsan Port and involved the Green Future, a methanol dual-fuel bulk carrier chartered by NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers from Kambara Kisen Co.
“This bunkering operation is a milestone that demonstrates Ulsan Port’s capability to deliver commercial-scale green methanol bunkering,” said UPA president Jae-young Byeon.
“Building on this achievement, we are committed to spearheading sustainable marine fuel bunkering as a trusted global hub.”
The fuel used was green methanol, produced by OCI Global and supplied by Itochu Corporation via the OTK Terminal’s storage facilities. The transfer was conducted through ship-to-ship (STS) bunkering at Ulsan New Port’s Southern Breakwater T/S Pier.
The event marks the first instance of green methanol STS bunkering for a dry bulk carrier in Korea, following Ulsan Port’s earlier global-first methanol bunkering demonstrations for container ships between 2023 and 2024.
