TMC chosen for methanol-fuelled container vessels
Under the agreement, TMC Compressors will deliver a complete marine compressed air system featuring its Smart Air technology, which offers energy savings of up to 40 percent compared to conventional compressors. The system will include both control and service air compressors.
Maersk has stated that these six vessels, equipped with dual-fuel engines capable of running on green methanol, represent a significant step in the company’s decarbonisation strategy and its goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040. Hans Petter Tanum, TMC’s director of sales and business development, expressed pride in the selection of the Smart Air compressors for these environmentally progressive ships.
The Smart Air compressors utilise frequency-controlled technology to precisely regulate compressor speed. This enables the electrical motor to adjust its speed based on the required air volume, optimising energy use. When air consumption decreases, the compressor’s speed reduces accordingly, resulting in lower power consumption.
Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group is scheduled to deliver the six 9,000 TEU vessels in 2026 and 2027. These dual-fuel vessels, capable of operating on both methanol and traditional fuel oil, are set to replace ships in a similar size class. Maersk anticipates that the new vessels will cut its annual greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 450,000 tonnes of CO2e on a lifecycle basis when operating on green methanol.
