Total Lubmarine wins high BN and blending approvals

The letters of no objection are timely, with suppliers developing ultra-high basicity cylinder oils for use with high-sulphur heavy fuel oil (HFO) in modern, cold-corrosion prone engines, as well as with an increasing array of onboard blending systems.

According to Total, Talusia HR 140 is designed for low-speed engines running on high sulphur fuel oil and boasts high acid neutralisation capacity to boost cylinder protection. This can extend the length of time between engine overhauls.

MAN’s Automated Cylinder Oil Mixing (ACOM) system is intended to simplify the lubrication aspect of fuel switching, for example on vessels using low-sulphur fuel in emission control areas (ECA) or with dual-fuel engines that alternate between HFO (requiring a high BN oil) and LNG (requiring low BN). Total’s Talusia LS 25 is designed for use in ECAs with low-sulphur fuels, with a low ash content that protects against deposit formation. It has already been approved by MAN for standalone use.
