Tsuneishi launches H2-powered passenger ferry

The ceremony to mark the recent delivery was attended by local dignitaries, the Ambassador of Belgium, and local schoolchildren.

The HydroBingo is the first 80 passenger ferry for commercial use to be powered by two diesel combustion engines capable of operating on diesel/hydrogen mixtures. The hydrogen-powered ferry produces significantly lower emissions of CO₂ and other greenhouse gases. CMB notes that CO₂ emissions are up to 50% lower compared with a conventional diesel engine.

CMB confirmed that the HydroBingo will be supplied with compressed hydrogen from a mobile hydrogen trailer at the stern, which is designed to deliver hydrogen to the engine via a double walled pipeline. Via a ramp, the trailer can be unloaded easily and can be brought to a refuelling station for refill. 

Alexander Saverys, CEO of CMB, paid tribute to the collaboration between the two companies, adding “CMB and Tsuneishi will continue to invest in hydrogen applications for the maritime and land-based industries. This is only the beginning of a very exciting journey towards zero carbon shipping.”

The Motorship reported in April that Tsuneishi and CMB had begun work on a project to build a hydrogen-powered tugboat, HydroPhoenix.
