UK funds MOL ammonia engine project
This initiative is part of the UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions (UK SHORE), which seeks to position the UK as a global leader in clean maritime technology.
The project is spearheaded by a consortium led by Carnot, in which MOL is an investor. Carnot is developing high-efficiency engine technology using heat-resistant materials to reduce energy loss during the cooling process, significantly improving fuel and thermal efficiency. MOL (Europe Africa) is participating alongside other UK-based businesses and academic partners including De Courcy Alexander, Houlder, Clean Air Power GT and the University of Southampton.
The project aims to deliver a retrofit ammonia auxiliary engine solution that reduces greenhouse gas emissions and operational costs for shipping companies. The University of Southampton will provide combustion simulations, while Clean Air Power GT will develop a high-flow ammonia injector. Houlder will support engine integration with De Courcy Alexander evaluating commercial potential and market strategy.
The collaboration supports MOL’s ‘BLUE ACTION 2035’ sustainability strategy, aiming to achieve growth while addressing environmental challenges.
