Ulstein to build offshore wind service vessels

The new vessels will be the first to feature Ulstein’s X-stern hull line design, which the company says increases operability by improving station keeping and wave response as well as comfort and safety in harsh conditions. The X-stern’s gentle displacement is said to reduce acceleration, pitch and heave, increasing the operational window. There will also be no sea on deck due to the stern shape and enclosed nature of the aft deck.

Ulstein has aimed to optimise the movements of the SX175 to ensure the safe transfer of technicians and equipment in connection with the operations, maintenance and servicing of wind turbines. The X-bow, the X-stern and the integrated DC-based common main drive system with variable rpm control of diesel engines are essential design features.

Ulstein developed final details and equipment for the vessels with Windea Offshore, Bernhard Schulte’s affiliate for offshore wind projects. The 88m long, 18m wide vessels can accommodate 60 people in single cabins. They are due for delivery in Q2 2016 and Q1 2017.
