The agreement was announced on 8 March. The unnamed bulk carrier is currently employed under a mid–term contract for the transportation of iron ore for Vale.

The Motorship notes that Vale has gained operational experience with bulk vessels equipped with rotor sails following the delivery of the Sea Zoushan in 2021.

The latest deal relates to the installation of two 35m x 5m rotor sails produced by Norsepower Oy Ltd, rather than five 25m x 4m rotor sails as in the previous installation.

The Norsepower Rotor Sail made of lightweight and strong composite material and with a fully automated control system, produces thrust as the wind generates differential pressure around the slewing rotor while the vessel is sailing.

By applying this solution, combined with voyage optimisation technology, the vessel is expected to achieve about 6-10% fuel and GHG emissions reductions.

The installation of the rotor sails is expected in the first half of 2024.
