Vard hybrid battery ESS for Atlantic Towing
Vard Electro will deliver the SeaQ energy storage system on board the Atlantic Shrike, one of four modern diesel-electric builds. Atlantic Towing has received funding for the project through Petroleum Research Newfoundland & Labrador which is part of the offshore research, development and demonstration program of Natural Resources Canada’s Emissions Reduction Fund.

The SeaQ ESS includes modes for peak shaving, spinning reserve and zero emission transit. Housed in its self-contained deck house, the system is controlled and monitored by the energy management system that communicates with the other onboard control systems.
The main purpose of the system is to reduce emissions, fuel consumption and increase safety. It does this by storing excess energy available in the vessel for later use to reduce fuel consumption and optimise performance. Fewer engines are required online at once and can operate at a more optimal load. The batteries can also give an immediate burst of energy in critical situations, increasing safety.
