VIDEO: Norsepower boosts integrated wind propulsion
The new system integrates aerodynamic improvements, structural redesign and a digital control ecosystem to deliver more consistent real-world performance. Central to the development is the Norsepower Sentient Control system, which uses real-time force measurements and vessel data to continuously optimise sail performance.
“The 3rd Gen Norsepower Rotor Sail represents the culmination of more than ten years of learning from real operations at sea,” said chief executive Heikki Pöntynen.
“By combining aerodynamic innovation with intelligent control systems, we are enabling our customers to unlock more performance while improving the economics of their investment.”
Unlike conventional systems that rely primarily on wind data, the technology analyses propulsion forces and fuel consumption to adjust operations dynamically, increasing performance yield by up to a reported 20%. The addition of the Wind Edge aerodynamic device further boosts thrust by an estimated 10–20%, improving overall fuel savings potential.
The launch comes as competition intensifies in the wind propulsion segment. Companies such as BAR Technologies are advancing rigid wing sail designs, while Anemoi is developing alternative rotor configurations with mechanical deployment features. Meanwhile, bound4blue is focusing on suction sail technology to enhance aerodynamic efficiency.
However, Norsepower is differentiating itself by moving beyond standalone hardware toward a fully integrated performance platform that combines sails, software and analytics. The system also introduces flexible sizing options, allowing installations to be tailored to different vessel types and operational requirements.
As regulatory and commercial pressure to decarbonise shipping increases, wind propulsion is gaining recognition as a practical near-term solution. Earlier this year wind propulsion in the commercial shipping sector was given a boost with the installation of Rotor Sails on board the new Stena Connecta RoRo vessel.
