Wärtsilä joins TwinShip data project

Sponsored by the European Union, the project will run from 2025 to 2028 and involves a consortium of over a dozen partners, including technology providers, ship design firms, classification societies and academic institutions.

The maritime industry faces significant challenges in achieving decarbonisation goals, primarily due to delays in investment decisions stemming from unreliable cost, performance, and emission estimates for new and retrofitted ship designs.

TwinShip aims to tackle this issue by developing a decision support system (DSS) that will aid in planning machinery setups, propulsion systems and energy-saving devices for both new builds and retrofits.

The DSS will use advanced AI algorithms to analyse vast swathes of real-world test data, generating reliable metrics to help guide ship operators in making informed decisions. The project also includes validation through four pilot vessel demonstrations.

Wärtsilä is committed to carbon neutrality in its operations and readiness for zero-carbon fuels by 2030 and will build upon the successes of its previous EU-funded projects such as SeaTech, CHEK, Green Ray and Ammonia2-4.
