Wärtsilä powers Aasen hybrid carrier

The vessel is the latest in a series of six bulk carriers to feature similar Wärtsilä technology, with the order booked in Q3 2025.

“The support from Wärtsilä and the performance efficiency of their equipment with the earlier ships in this series have strongly contributed to our dedication to operating efficient and cleaner cargo transport,” said Torbjørn Torkelsen, chief executive of Aasen Shipping.

The system combines a Wärtsilä 25 main engine with a hybrid propulsion setup, including a DC hub, 620 kWh battery capacity, and integrated power and energy management systems. The engine features a Wärtsilä NOx reducer, a controllable pitch propeller with shaft line, a Wärtsilä gearbox, and the ProTouch remote propulsion control system.

The Wärtsilä 25 is a medium-speed 4-stroke engine, designed for future fuel flexibility, capable of running on low- or zero-carbon fuels, and available in 6L to 9L configurations with outputs of 1.7–3.4 MW.

“Our hybrid propulsion systems are designed to allow vessels to run efficiently across various operating modes, adapting seamlessly to changing conditions. This flexibility contributes to improved fuel efficiency and enhances overall performance.”

The Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled for delivery during the first half of 2027.
