Wärtsilä splashes €50 million on R&D expansion

Wärtsilä is set to expand the testing capabilities and facilities at its Sustainable Technology Hub in Vaasa, Finland, in a move that underscores its commitment to accelerating the development of sustainable marine and energy technologies. The planned 8,000-square-metre extension, due for commissioning in 2028, will bolster the company’s ability to address the growing demand for next-generation, fuel-flexible solutions and support future applications of low- and zero-carbon fuels.

This strategic investment is expected to significantly shorten product development cycles, reduce the time and cost associated with engine testing, lower test-related emissions, and lay the groundwork for increased manufacturing capacity at the facility. With sustainability and efficiency at the core of industry priorities, Wärtsilä aims to reinforce its position as a key enabler in the maritime sector’s energy transition.

As Juha Kytölä, director of R&D and engineering for power supply at Wärtsilä, explains, the pressure to decarbonise by 2050 means decisions about propulsion systems for new vessels are being made today. To meet these long-term targets, it is imperative that new-build engines are capable of running on sustainable fuels such as ammonia, hydrogen, and methanol as these become commercially viable. Wärtsilä’s expanded R&D capacity will play a crucial role in ensuring that its solutions remain ahead of the curve, offering customers the flexibility and performance required in an evolving regulatory and operational landscape.

Since its inauguration in 2022, the Sustainable Technology Hub has become a focal point for innovation and collaboration in marine decarbonisation. The centre brings together Wärtsilä’s internal expertise with input from customers, technology partners, academic institutions, and the wider industrial ecosystem. In addition to engine manufacturing, the site incorporates a training facility and a global remote monitoring centre, supporting customers with real-time insights and operational optimisation. This latest investment will further consolidate the Hub’s role as a cornerstone of Wärtsilä’s strategy to lead the transition to a decarbonised maritime industry.
