WATCH: Wind propulsion prototype completes sea trials
DNV granted the Wing560 design certificate in early June, confirming regulatory compliance and safety for the retrofit. Installation was completed at Damen Shipyard in Rotterdam between 21 and 24 June 2026 before Tirranna departed on its next voyage.

Commercial milestone
Harbour Acceptance Tests and Sea Acceptance Tests were completed by 1 July, enabling Oceanbird to begin gathering operational performance data from its first onboard prototype as it advances wind propulsion for the commercial car carrier sector.
The 46-metre-high and 14-metre-wide Wing560 rigid wing sail has been designed to provide additional thrust for the 230-metre vessel, supporting vessel propulsion through wind-assisted technology.
Oceanbird engineers will remain onboard for a limited period to monitor usage, evaluate efficiency and collect performance data under commercial operating conditions.
Wallenius Wilhelmsen described the installation as an important opportunity to assess shipping technology that complements wider emissions reduction initiatives through improved energy efficiency.
The project also represents Oceanbird’s commercial market entry and a step towards broader adoption of wind propulsion and renewable energy solutions across the global shipping industry.
Oceanbird confirmed that two further Wing560 installations are scheduled for an undisclosed vessel in spring 2027.
