Water-based safety for ammonia-fuelled ships
The innovative system is designed to circulate freshwater through the gap between the inner and outer layers of double-wall fuel pipes.
This mechanism serves as a safeguard against ammonia leakage, one of the most pressing safety concerns in ammonia-powered ship design due to the fuel’s high toxicity and corrosiveness.
“This joint development marks an important step in accelerating the transition to ammonia-fuelled vessels,” said SHIM Hakmu, executive vice president of HD Hyundai Samho.
“Through collaboration with KR, we will generate technological synergies and enhance our competitiveness in the global market.”
Ammonia is increasingly viewed as a next-generation, carbon-free marine fuel, but its widespread adoption hinges on overcoming serious safety challenges. Current ship designs lack proven, practical solutions for managing leakage risks, especially in fuel supply systems. The proposed circulation system aims to fill that gap by reducing the chance of toxic exposure during vessel operation.
Under the agreement signed at Gastech 2025, HD Hyundai Samho will be responsible for system design and engineering, while KR will focus on validating the system’s safety and compliance.
“With this partnership, we aim to secure key safety technologies for ammonia-fuelled vessels at an early stage and lead the development of future international regulations,” said YEON Kyujin, senior vice president of KR.
KR also plans to propose new safety standards to the International Maritime Organization.
