Wind-assisted cargo ship up for charter

This collaboration aims to increase the presence of the wind-assisted cargo ship in the global charter market. The ‘E-Ship 1’, originally designed for transporting wind turbine components, also frequently carries non-Enercon cargo on its worldwide voyages.

“In the past, we still had capacity available on some voyages,” said Hendrik Peterburs, vice president Global Logistics at Enercon.

“However, we are interested in optimal capacity utilisation – if only for reasons of sustainability, to which we are naturally committed as a renewable energy company.

“This new cooperation with EMS Chartering has already led to an increase in the amount of cargo inquiries from third parties.”

The E-Ship 1 is a 130m LoRo vessel, equipped with advanced technologies including a diesel-electric propulsion system and four Flettner rotors, harnessing wind power to reduce fuel consumption by up to 15%, depending on conditions.

The ship also features an optimised hull, a variable-pitch propeller and a specially adapted rudder, all contributing to fuel savings.

Since its commissioning in 2010, the ‘E-Ship 1’ has been integral in transporting wind turbine components globally. With a cargo hold spanning 3,600 sqm and two cranes, it can safely carry heavy breakbulk cargo, ensuring a reliable and sustainable solution for global shipping.
