Wind-assisted propulsion for LNG carriers

The collaboration aims to integrate OceanWings’ rigid wing sail technology with the DFE+ (Diesel-Electric with variable speed) propulsion system co-developed by Everllence and ABB.

The concept is expected to deliver significant fuel savings and emissions reductions by combining wind power with high-efficiency electric propulsion and the future integration of sustainable energy sources like batteries and fuel cells.

“LNG carriers sail fast and spend typically 70% of their time at sea,” said Romain Grandsart, chief operating officer of OceanWings.

“This is ideal for harnessing wind and the full potential of OceanWings’ rigid wingsails. Combined with DFE+, this unlocks high double-digit fuel savings and greenhouse gas emissions reduction.”

ABB believes the partnership reflects a critical shift in maritime energy strategies. “The flexibility of our hybrid electrical propulsion system is a good match with the variable power contribution from the wind,” said Rune Lysebo, head of strategic market development at ABB’s Marine and Ports division.

“By using ABB’s advanced power and energy solution, we are able to optimise the operational efficiency of the vessel.”

Dominik Thoma, global manager LNG Cargo at Everllence, said, “While WAPS introduces highly variable propulsion demand due to fluctuating wind conditions, DFE+ propulsion offers precise load control and operational flexibility.

“This makes it exceptionally well-suited to harness intermittent wind power.”

The initial focus will be on a next-generation LNG carrier concept, with broader cargo applications expected. The partners aim to target long-distance routes, vessels with deck space for wing sails and operations requiring flexible power solutions.
