The 10 × MAN B&W 7G80ME-GI Mk10.5 main engines will offer the option of operating on LNG or conventional fuel. The first engine delivery is scheduled for October 2023. The vessels are expected to be delivered from Yangzijang Shipbuilding between Q3 and Q4 2024. The order includes an option for a further 5 engines: Seaspan announced in September that it was taking up an option for a further 5 7,000-teu newbuildings.

MAN Energy Solutions noted that the series of newbuildings will be the largest ME-GI-powered container vessels to be built by a Chinese shipyard. The order will be the first time that 80-bore ME-GI engines are installed upon a Chinese-built vessel.

The newbuildings will enter into a long-term charter with ZIM Integrated Shipping Services upon delivery.

Thomas S. Hansen, Head of Promotion and Customer Support, MAN Energy Solutions, said: “Our ME-GI engine continues to enjoy success within new vessel segments – including non-LNG-bearing carrier applications – primarily due to the ever-increasing focus on methane-slip reduction and fuel efficiency. This latest mark of the engine comes with a gas-optimised tuning that significantly improves fuel efficiency when operating on gas, while simultaneously maintaining an industry-leading, low methane-slip of just 0.20-0.28 g/kWh over its entire load range.

MAN Energy Solutions reports that it has received multiple orders from Chinese shipyards for ME-GI engines for a broad variety of projects including pure car-truck carriers (PCTCs), bulk carriers, and oil tankers in recent months.
