First virtual training contract for MAN

The virtual reality training solution, said to be the first of its kind in the marine sector, will train crews to operate and maintain engines on the new Royal Canadian Navy Arctic and offshore patrol ships. Each ship will be propelled by two MAN engines, each with an output of 4.5MW, arranged in a diesel-electric configuration.

“This contract marks MAN Energy Solution’s move into new enterprise where digitalisation is adding to our product line,” said Wayne Jones, chief sales officer and board member, MAN Energy Solutions. “This strategic shift is about providing value to our customers in innovative ways where MAN capitalises on our existing information and emerging technology. The Virtual Trainer Contract is our first significant product in this area.”

MAN Energy Solutions will lead the project, while Modest Tree will develop the software application to ensure that MAN’s engine maintenance programme can be carried out by the crew. Ontario-based GasTops will develop an engine simulator to drive the application.

As part of Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy, Halifax Shipyard is building the ships followed by 15 Canadian surface combatants over the next 25 years. The first three Arctic and offshore patrol ships are under construction.
