ABB development drive targets unmanned bridge
The Marine Pilot Control system was launched in September. It simplifies control processes by enabling high-speed transit operations and low-speed maneuvering to be controlled from the same unit. The solution, which deploys algorithmic prediction to enable safe operation at any speed, joins the Marine Pilot Vision system, launched last year to allow crew to assess the ship’s immediate surroundings via multiple sensors wherever they are on the vessel.

In a recent white paper, ABB puts these developments in the context of its work towards developing a ‘conditionally and periodically unmanned bridge – or B0. The unmanned bridge, the authors argue, will enable more efficient utilization of vessel crew, reduction in fatigue and increased safety.
The paper reviews the main tasks of the crew at the bridge and elaborates the benefits of B0 concept. It also includes a review of the regulatory framework that will either require amendment or a demonstrated equivalent or better status with the appropriate use of technology.
