Industry taskforce tackles alternative fuels investment

The plan follows a meeting of the IMO Global Industry Alliance to Support Low Carbon Shipping (GIA) at IMO’s London headquarters on 27 November. During that meeting the group – a public-private partnership initiative that includes marine technology suppliers, data providers, classification societies and ship owners – focused on technological innovation and the global introduction of alternative fuels and energy sources. Both topics will be integral to achieving the overall ambition in the IMO strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships.

The meeting reviewed the different workstreams the GIA has embarked on, including the development of an electronically delivered training course on energy efficient ship operation for seafarers and shore-based personnel, as well as work on solutions to support the uptake of just-in-time operation of ships.

The alliance also agreed to continue its work until December 2019, in line with the time-scale of the parent Global Maritime Energy Efficiency Partnerships (GloMEEP) project.
