OCIMF outlines VOC emission controls

The report includes information on regulations, equipment, safety concerns, training and other design and installation considerations that will help operators better understand the technologies and methods available for controlling these emissions.

The OCIMF document notes that while the IMO requires all members to develop a VOC Management Plan that follows MEPC guidelines, there is no requirement for ship owners to install a Vapour Emission Control System. The paper notes that aside from the environmental advantages of minimising atmospheric emissions of VOCs, reductions in VOC emissions would also lower the loss of cargo from light end losses (assuming VOC emissions are not captured and returned to the cargo tanks).

The space and energy requirements of different emission control systems vary, as does their efficiency during transit and during loading/discharge.
