MAN Energy Solutions to develop second test engine in 2019

Decarbonisation, dual-fuel and digital engine technologies will be focus areas for the new test engine in Copenhagen

MAN Energy Solutions submitted a planning application for a four-cylinder test engine at its south Copenhagen site in early 2018 and already received planning approval by that summer.

Construction on the new test engine and facility began in late 2018. The test engine will have the same dimensions as the existing 4T50MEX engine with a 500mm bore and 4 cylinders.

The second engine will significantly increase MAN Energy Solutions’ research capability and further bring forward development of decarbonisation technologies and dual fuel environmentally-friendly engines. It will also support the digitalization process with remote engine control since integrated remote control allows engineers to access data on engine performance remotely and in real time.

Meanwhile, a research and testing facility at Hyundai Heavy Industries Engine and Machinery Division (HHI-EMD) is in its final preparation stage and its own, new test engine will be in operation by the middle of 2019. The test engine at Ulsan is connected to Copenhagen’s research and development centre and will focus on the development of MAN Energy Solutions’ dual fuel engine technology.

The doubling of test engine capacity in Copenhagen and the beginning of testing at the new Ulsan test engine will extend MAN Energy Solutions’ access to test cylinders. This is particularly relevant as concurrent advances in digitisation solutions, such as MAN Energy Solutions’ engine management software, the introduction of alternative fuels, such as ethane and methane, and rapid advances in modelling of complex processes all require additional test engine availability.
