Up until now ROVs and AUVs have primarily been used for oceanographic surveys and offshore oil and gas field development but are becoming increasingly used to maintain offshore wind power facilities and pipelines. No international standard for such technologies has yet been implemented.

With this in mind, ClassNK has developed its ‘Guidelines for ROV/AUV’ which establishes requirements related to the equipment and basic items required for the operation of these vehicles, as well as precautions and safety measures.

The guidelines also explain related terms and classifications and include usage examples so that they can be used as introductory material on ROVs/AUVs. They include the requirement for ROVs service suppliers as well as specifying survey and damage verification procedures.

As the use of drones expands, the society will continue to review and update the guidelines as necessary following feedback from the industry.
