MAN ES REFINES G45 TWO-STROKE SERIES

The C9.7 variant of the 450mm-bore G45ME engine offers specific fuel oil consumption (SFOC) reductions across the board relative to the current G45ME-C9.5 type.

The improved performance values are the result of design enhancements, with no change to the layout diagram. Key developmental features of the C9.7 model are a new combustion chamber configuration, new designs of exhaust valve and FlexRod connecting rod, and updated fuel valve.

With high-load optimisation, the Tier II G45ME-C9.7 promises a 166g/kWh burn rate at 100% nominal maximum continuous rating (MCR), compared to 170g/kWh for the existing type. For low-load optimised models, applying exhaust gas bypass (EGB) tuning, reductions are also obtained over the entire load range, albeit at slightly lower levels than for the high-load optimised engine.

As regards Tier III applications, there is a choice of four engine tuning possibilities, namely EGRBP, EcoEGR, HPSCR and LPSCR, using exhaust gas recirculation or selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology. In its G45ME-C9.7 EcoEGR designation, for instance, the new iteration is listed with a 164g/kWh SFOC at 100% load in Tier II mode, compared to 168g/kWh for the C9.5.

While the C9.7 additions are fuel oil-burning engines, gas-injected machinery will still be available for ordering in the shape of the G45ME-C9.5 GI version.

The G45ME-C series is characterised by an exceptionally high stroke-to-bore ratio of 5:1, given a piston travel distance of 2,250mm. Produced by licensees in five-, six-, seven- and eight-cylinder in-line format, the type covers a maximum output range from 6,950kW to 11,120kW at 111rpm.

Last year, MAN released a revised version of its smallest two-stroke, the 350mm-bore engine. The new S35ME-C9.7 replaces the S35ME-B type, achieving lower SFOC over the complete operating load profile.
