HiMSEN develops dual-fuel engine control technology

The company, which first introduced the technology concept in 2019, said that its HiMECS (Hyundai intelligent Machinery and Equipment Control System) system had been successfully tested during the sea trial of a dual-fuel crude oil tanker.

HHI-EMD noted that the engine control logic and software had been developed independently. Meanwhile, HHI-EMD noted that by using a virtual engine model in the engine control system, the commissioning period of dual-fuel propulsion systems could be reduced by more than 30 percent without physical engine operation.

The system was designed to help to ensure optimal fuel efficiency during operation by controlling variable control parameters, while protecting the engine from knocking by immediately detecting combustion pressure and vibration changes. HHI-EMD also noted that the footprint of the system had been reduced, as the size of the control panel had been reduced by 35 percent while the cable arrangement had been optimised.

HHI-EMD anticipates expanding the application of the HiMECS system to hybrid electric propulsion control systems (HiMECS-e). The technology developer noted that it was also planning to develop engine control systems for future alternative fuel burning engines.
