ABC obtains EU Stage V emission certificate

The certification applies to ABC’s DZC series with a power output of 600-2000 kW. Also certified at Stage V are the company’s VDZC-series 10 cylinder and 12 cylinder engines in power classes from 1900 to 4000 kilowatts.

To meet the requirements of the certification, the engines are equipped with a separable combination of selective catalytic reduction equipment and a diesel particulate filter (DPF). The DPF system reduces particulate matter emissions significantly as well as other emissions. It periodically oxidizes the soot by raising the temperature to maintain filter performance. This oxidization process can also be manually triggered.

ABC noted in its press release that the system offered a ‘strong’ increase in fuel efficiency and reduction in emissions.

The company also noted that it had benefited during the certification process from the integration of the production, development and testing phases at its Ghent works.

While the Stage V emission requirement has applied to all inland navigation engines for new builds as well as for repowering in the EU since January 2020, ABC also identified seagoing vessels as a potential market for the solution.

The company’s larger DL36 and DV36 engines comply with IMO Tier III regulations with an SCR.
