MAN OFFERS EEXI ASSESSMENT REPORTS REGARDLESS OF ENGINE MANUFACTURER

For EEXI compliance, MAN ES will provide an EEXI assessment report containing an evaluation of measures needed to comply with EEXI and a proposal for implementing those measures. The proposal will include solutions such as engine power limitation, mechanical retrofits and upgrades and dual-fuel conversion. These solutions for customers will be available after the adoption of the new EEXI regulations at MEPC 76 in June 2021.

EEXI requirements relate to ships above 400gt and will take effect from 1 January 2023. The EEXI is based on a required reduction factor (expressed as a percentage relative to the Energy Efficiency Design Index baseline). Ships must be surveyed for compliance with EEXI requirements at the first annual, intermediate or renewal survey following the entry into force. Accordingly, all EEXI certificates should be issued no later than by the relevant date between 1 January 2023 and 31 December 2023.

The EEXI survey will take place while in port; no in-service tests will be required, but MAN ES strongly urges its customers to act as soon as possible as demand for technical solutions is expected to increase as the deadline approaches. Existing and new MAN customers will initially have to contact their local MAN PrimeServ office in order to get the EEXI assessment report. Later on, a web-based solution will be made available.

The EEXI assessment report is based on design and test bed data, as EEXI is a design related efficiency index. Basic data about the ship is required, and MAN will request data regarding the main engine that is available from shop test reports. MAN is able to propose performance improvements for customers who haven’t used MAN service engineers or original parts and will be able to offer EEXI assessment reports regardless of designer/manufacturer of the main and auxiliary engines, as long as the necessary data is provided.

EEXI assessment report can also be requested by charterers. However, according to the regulation it is the shipowner who has the responsibility of complying with EEXI requirements and having a valid EEXI certificate.

MAN is also offering Carbon intensity indicator (CII) services. The CII is defined as CO2 emissions per transport work2 (e.g. CO2 / dwt x nautical mile), and from 1 January 2023, all ships above 5,000gt will have to calculate and report their CII on an annual basis. Based on this, they will be rated A to E (A = major superior performance, B = minor superior, C = moderate, D = minor inferior, E = inferior performance). Ships rated D for three consecutive years or rated E will require a plan to improve their rating. Administrations and port authorities are being encouraged to provide incentives for ships rated A or B.

MAN ES will be able to generate CII reports annually based on the actual travelled distance and fuel consumption of the vessel. To improve CII performance, MAN ES can provide a series of fuel saving solutions. For 2-stroke engines, this includes dual-fuel conversion, engine power limitation, turbocharger cut-out (the option to disable one of the turbochargers), PMI Adaptive Cylinder Control (optimised exhaust valve operation), PMI AutoTuning (optimised cylinder pressure), MAN EcoTorque (to improve cylinder liner condition), MAN EcoNozzle (redesigned fuel nozzle featuring an optimized fuel spray pattern), MAN EcoCam (flexible exhaust valve timing), PMI Variable Injection Timing and other customised retrofit solutions such as de-rating, part load optimisation, propeller upgrade, installation of other propulsion efficiency improving devices as well as exhaust gas bypass retrofits.

For 4-stroke genset engines, solutions offered include part load optimisation, wet and dry cleaning and low-sac nozzle installation. For 4-stroke main engines, solutions can include dual-fuel conversion, engine power limitation, turbocharger retrofit, life cycle upgrade (DF ready), part load optimization and waste heat recovery (ORC) system installation.

MAN will utilize its global network of MAN PrimeServ service hubs for the implementation of technical measures to improve efficiency, reliability and to meet EEXI and CII requirements. MAN says existing engines, machinery, auxiliary systems, instrumentation and control systems might be aging, but that does not mean they cannot keep delivering value. Upgrades to meet EEXI and CII requirements can boost performance, save on fuel and lube oil while lowering maintenance costs and enabling more flexible operation. Continuous development and modernisation through comprehensive, tailored retrofit solutions can bring assets up to date and keep them there, says MAN ES.
