New DNV notation for offshore GHG reduction

ABATE is a voluntary and modular notation, comprising a management aspect and a number of qualifiers, namely power generation, flaring, leakages and venting of methane, storage tanks venting and carbon capture. The new notation is being piloted by Altera Infrastructure on the Petrojarl Knarr floating production system.

“The ABATE notation aims to help offshore owners reduce GHG emissions on their installations by creating engagement and commitment on this issue, from both the owners and their management systems, through setting clear targets today, assessing progress, while also being able to adjust plans to incorporate future technologies,” said Geir Fuglerud, director of offshore classification at DNV Maritime.

Currently offshore installations are not covered by international requirements such as those set out by the IMO to drive the decarbonisation of the shipping industry.

The ABATE notation provides a structured way to identify and assess the implementation of abatement measures, based on individual installations, to enable measurable reductions in GHG emissions. Primarily developed to cover offshore oil and gas installations, the general principles can be also applied to other floating offshore installations.
