Rolls-Royce mtu revamp for Spanish catamaran

Four new-generation mtu 20V1163 M84 units replaced the previous 1163 units, reducing fuel consumption by 8% and nitrogen oxide emissions by a third, meaning the vessel now meets IMO Tier II standards.

Alongside its new engines, the renewed automation system brings new software, screens and computers with interfaces to other systems on board. The mtu Go! Digital platform allows the user to remotely access ship data, monitor its condition and plan maintenance.

The Avemar Dos is now the fourth Balearia ferry to be powered by mtu. “Several of these ferries are supported by mtu Value Care maintenance agreements, individually tailored to suit each vessel,” said Pablo Vivancos, sales general manager at Rolls-Royce Solutions Iberica.

Capable of carrying 855 passengers and 174 vehicles and originally transversing the Strait of Gibraltar between Algeciras and Ceuta, the revamped 82m catamaran now travels between Denia on the mainland and the Balearic islands of Ibiza and Majorca.

Besides the Avemar Dos, the Ramon Lull high-speed ferry was recently re-powered using mtu Series 4000 engines whilst other high-speed ferries, like Nixe and HSC Formentera Direct, have used mtu propulsion since going into service.
