MacGregor upgrades variable frequency drive electric cranes

Since MacGregor introduced the first electric cranes in 2007, there have been significant advances in electric motor and drive system technology. These developments have enabled the winch design, motor efficiency and cooling system to be further improved. MacGregor claims that the new generation crane is 15% more efficient than the first generation design and up to 50% more efficient compared to traditional closed-loop hydraulic designs. 

MacGregor notes that the solution’s other advantages, including potential savings in capital expenditure through reduced generator size, smaller electric cables and no oil filling, remain the same. The solution offers better cargo handling efficiency due to higher speeds and precision control, reducing time in port.

The elimination of hydraulic oil requirements also lowers maintenance costs, and removes the potential risk of oil leakage. MacGregor has delivered more than 500 electric drives since 2007, with offers electrical versions for all the merchant cranes in its portfolio, including bulker, container, multi-purpose and heavy lift cranes.
