Bunker licensing survey

The International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) along with BIMCO is polling stakeholders to establish whether wider adoption of the practices can help improve market conditions.

IBIA formed the IBIA Bunker Licensing & MFM Working Group in 2021 to identify key elements of bunker licensing programmes. “IBIA’s ambition is to create greater alignment and transparency across bunker ports and strengthen the credibility of our industry by the use of MFM,” said IBIA chair Henrik Zederkof.

Both IBIA and BIMCO believe greater transparency in the bunker industry will help minimise malpractice and reduce disputes over the quality and quantity of fuel supply. To this end they have set up a working group of 24 IBA members along with other stakeholders such as ports and insurance companies.

“The implementation of licensing schemes that award high quality fuel oil suppliers will help improve the level of quality of the fuel delivered and provide significant financial savings for shipowners and bunker suppliers,” said David Loosley, BIMCO secretary general and chief executive.

Wider industry participation is now being sought into the appetite for changes to licensing schemes. The survey takes approximately seven to ten minutes to complete and can be found here.
